Join us at the Hill Street Country Club on Sunday, February 25th for SOUND & LIBERATION, a night of experimental performance celebrating Black expression. Come join us for an evening of sonic exploration and cultural celebration!

About the Performers

Joy Guidry

Radical self-love, compassion, laughter, and the drive to amplify Black artmakers and noisemakers comprise the core of bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry’s work. Their performances have been hailed by The San Diego Union Tribune as “lyrical and haunting...hair-raising and unsettling.” Joy was born in Houston, Texas, into a creative family that played a big part in who they’ve become today. A versatile improviser and a composer of experimental, daring new works that embody a deep love of storytelling.

Niecy Blues

South Carolina singer and producer Niecy Blues describes their songwriting process like an undertow: “I feel a strange pull, and let it carry me, following swirling leaves… whole days roll by, forgetting about the body.” Her full-length debut, Exit Simulation, captures this sense of deep-rooted divination, cycling between simmering ballads, ghosted R&B, downtempo gospel, and looped vocal improvisations – often within the same track.

Myles Ortiz-Green

Los Angeles native Myles Ortiz-Green is a multidisciplinary artist, pianist and composer and explores the ideas of interconnectedness, digital identity, decadence, and the “in-between” in their work. As a pianist with a background in classical and jazz studies, they combine analogue and digital electronics and improvisation to manipulate samples and field recordings.

The Hill Street Country Club presents LO QUE QUEDA EN EL CAMINO, A FREE movie screening with community workshops, Mothers’Day portraits, youth activities and more…

Sunday, May 14th 2023 and Sunday, May 30th, 2023

Time: 1:00pm  to 4:00 pm  Screening begins at 2:00pm

Food will be provided Cost: FREE

All Ages

LO QUE QUEDA EN EL CAMINO tells the story of Lilian and her four children as they migrate in search for a better life. The family leaves Guatemala, joining a caravan of thousands of other people trying to reach the Mexico-US border. Being a single mother, this is Lilian’s best chance to make the dangerous journey.

About the screening (some intentions )

This screening event in collaboration with local partner organizations seeks to build a space for not only essential community education, but open dialogue and critical reflection, particularly in regards to the experiences of migrant/refugee womxn and the role of gender-based violence in the ongoing migration crisis. In this event, we embrace the potential for a cinema space in which participants feel welcome and supported in the sharing of their personal experiences, solutions, resources and connection.

S.A.F. conversations at these events along the US-MX borderlands may potentially tend to center migrants from Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. While it is certainly important that we address the specific needs and experiences of those communities, this event is also an opportunity to reflect on migration as a global issue and to consider how we can also build and sustain transnational solidarity with migrants from Africa and the Middle East, including the many asylum seekers currently crossing the Mediterranean into Europe.

It is worth noting that as this series takes place, we are facing a frightening increase in policing and militarization at the US-MX border, as Title 42 will have nearly or recently come to a close. In a time of extreme brutality, we hope this screening program can serve as a catalyst for further reflections, discussions, and care-based community-based collaborations in acknowledgement and support of those who continue to collectively resist border regimes at the US-MX border and beyond.

The Silent Disc0 - Lovers & Friends

Sat, Jan 28, 2:00 PM

Oceanside's first and only recurring locals vendor market and Silent Disco! With vendors, workshops, drinks, and food from Friedupco. End your day with the best Silent Disco this side of the Mississippi! It's an open format party so that means we'll have 3 DJ's spinning Hip Hop, R&b, Latin, Oldies, EDM, Edits, and all kinds of music you probably wouldn't hear at the club. It's a music lover's oasis away from boring crowds and empty dancefloors so come lose yourself in the music...silently, of course. BIPOC and Queer Friendly!

SILENT DISC0 SCHEDULE:

2:00 - 6:00 PM | Makers n More Market (all ages)

2:30 - 3:30 | “ I AM “ Workshop

7: 00 - 11:00PM | Silent Disco ( 21 and over)

About Silent Disco:

DJ Ciara Dominique, Creative Curator Autumn Hill, and Master Community Builder Bianca Lopez have united to create The Silent Disco: Oceanside’s very own recurring Silent Disco. We saw a need for Oceanside to have their own party that is accessible for those of us who want to dance and listen to music with our friends but don’t love the overstimulating environment of a club. As we all know, the bars and spaces in our city aren’t the most inviting for queer BIPOC folks and we don’t always have the capability to travel to San Diego so we created an event that checks all the boxes. If it’s the event we’ve been craving, we know we can’t be the only ones. As we continue to host these events, we are looking to raise enough money to cut out the middle man and buy our own equipment so we can take the party anywhere!

Under my skin by amel janae

april 8 - april 22

The Hill Street Country Club is pleased to announce our upcoming pop-up exhibition “Under My Skin” by Amel Janae, Friday April 8th from 6 - 9PM

Schedule a Viewing Appointment
April 8th - April 22nd

RSVP HERE

Amel Janae is a painter, turned photographer and seamstress who focuses on the human form throughout all her mediums. Most recently, Janae has honed in on self portraiture.

With the original intention of self-reflection in mind, Janae has brought it to life by seeing her body through a lens outside of her own. That lens revealed a view of herself she had been waiting to see in real time. Attributes within herself that can be dissected in a visual image.

Through Amel Janae’s use of chiaroscuro in her self portraits, she reveals only certain parts of herself. Despite knowing the beauty of the entirety, Janae anticipates that other parts (which she loves, but is hesitant to share) will be noticed, despite them being in the dark. Janae describes this body of work as a coming to terms with how she views herself, and letting go of how others do. Under My Skin will be the first true view inside Amel Janae’s mind.

crying on the blue line trolley
A solo Exhibition by Andres Hernandez

January 8 - February 28

The Hill Street Country Club is excited to announce our next solo exhibition, “Crying On The Blue Line Trolley” by Andrés Hernández

Schedule a Viewing Appointment
January 8th - February 28th

530 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA
Click Here to Schedule a Gallery Viewing

Crying on the Blue Line Trolley features Andrés Hernández’s first departure from illustration. It consists of analogue photography that takes from and recontextualizes the visual makeup of San Diego and Tijuana into a series of hybrid landscapes.

Andres uses poetry and video to accompany her photos, referencing South Bay’s public transit landscape and detailing her experience as a lover separated by the architectural violence that is the US/Mexican border.

Her altered images which represent structures of limitation juxtaposed to reimagined structures of liberation, furthering the notion of architectural possibility as a response to architectural violence, and inviting us to consider how places existing in separate environments could somehow be unified.

Seamlessly reframing the border wall and its adjacent fields and estuary alongside the interweaving California highway bridges, Hernández’s first U.S solo exhibition is a daring personal declaration of her commitment to vulnerability, and a poetic “fuck you” to the funding and militarization of the Mexican border.

Andrés Hernández is a self-taught non-binary Mexican artist living in Tijuana. She quietly writes and makes art about her life. She is a firm believer that soft-spoken art also deserves to be heard.

I wish you knew: poetry workshop

Workshop dates: feb 10/17/24 + March 3

Register Here.

Join Andres Hernandez at the HSCC + Libelula Bookstore as she leads a 4 part poetry workshop encouraging self-representation and connection.

  • This workshop series helps the participant emphasize the importance of honoring the seemingly trivial and the political potential of mundane self-representations. This four week workshop introduces the concept of documentation of quotidian experiences as a tool for reflecting upon our current socio-economic and psycho-historical environment. Like Andres reflects on her own connection to the border and it’s challenges, ‘I Wish You Knew” invites participants to dig deep into their own personal identities through poetry.

  • 15 seats available, act now!

  • Admission: $20 - $30 per person (sliding scale) for all 4 workshops

  • 3 sessions will be held at The Hill Street Country Club in Oceanside, and 1 workshop will be held at Libelula Bookstore in Barrio Logan.

  • Dates:

  1. Thursday, Feb 3rd - 5PM @ The Hill Street Country Club

  2. Thursday, Feb 10th - 5PM @ The Hill Street Country Club

  3. Thursday, Feb 17th - 5PM @ The Hill Street Country Club

  4. Thursday, Feb 24th - 5PM @ Libelula Books

Session One: A Gratitude to the Body

  • During this first session, participants will explore the importance of cultivating self-awareness as an invitation to learn about their own personal identities.

  • Presenting the idea that personality, mood and identity can be visually defined and/or undefined

Session Two: The Orange

  • This second installment will touch on the importance of honoring the seemingly trivial and the political potential of mundane self-representations. Participants will share reflections on quotidian experiences to create poems.

  • Introducing the idea that short poetry can be used to document and expand upon quotidian objects and/or experiences that could be at first glance insignificant but potentially metaphorical in reflecting upon their current socio-economic and psycho-historical environment.

  • Documenting lived experiences by highlighting the importance of capturing small observations about our surroundings and belongings as a way to create metaphorical connections and symbolisms that can ground personal identities and sense of pride.

Session Three: Places for Contemplation

  • This session will consist of a field trip (location TBD).

  • Participants will use the time provided to meditate and reflect on the relationships with those around them and the ways in which they wish to improve by articulating the things that they wish they could’ve heard from them.

Session Four: Critique Circle & Pep-Talk (at Libelula Books)

  • Coaching and proofreading in collaboration with Ted Washington

Mirada incidental:
A pop-up art exhibition
by miguel ‘posk’ montano

Miguel “Posk” Montaño is an artist who resides in Ciudad Azteca, or Aztec City, Mexico. While his roots are in graffiti and street art, ‘Mirada Incidental’ shows how Posk utilizes his metropolitan lens to influence the way he relates to his culture and the rest of the world through photo collages of found objects, accidental sculptures, and the cultural imprint of mankind that’s left of the streets of Aztec City through consumer capitalism. Javier Villegas felt that inviting his mentor to display his work during the last two weeks of his solo exhibition was a fitting full circle moment where he could pay homage and honor those who have guided him and inspired him to be the artist he has become today, both with a shared universal message.

The Hill Street Country Club is proud to present our first fundraising Gala, highlighting and enabling the contributions and influence of BIPOC visionaries of DIY arts culture in support of funding education and arts programming at the HSCC for the 2022 Fiscal Year. ClubBoutika_HighTeaEventFlyer.jpeg

The Hill Street Country Club x Club Boutika acknowledge that Oceanside and Goat Hill Park mark ancestral land that was wrongfully stolen from the Kumeeyay and Luiseño peoples. The HSCC extends its respect and gratitude to the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples who have lived here since time immemorial. Today, the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples continue to maintain their political sovereignty and cultural traditions as vital members of the San Diego Community. High Tea is a reclamation of community, culinary, and culture, and we understand that our work is not done until our indigenous siblings are liberated, celebrated and affirmed along side all members of Turtle Island. Settler colonialism is an ongoing issue and we must continue to build our mindfulness of our present participation, and encourage our community to do the same.

🎫 Guests will have the option to join us in-person via Eventbrite reserved seating -OR- via Zoom! 👩🏾‍💻

❣️ The Great Indian Kitchen is a 2021 film from Kerala, India, directed by Joe Baby. This compelling film revolves around the familiar sights and sounds of Indian cuisine, but unlike any yearning for wholesome Indian food, this showcases the invisible labor of women and the drudgery of housework in many Indian homes. Very regional yet extremely universal, this moving film captures the subtle nuances of patriarchy that sneak into relationships and lifestyles by following the life of a young bride as she navigates life in her domestic surroundings. Effortlessly portrayed by the beautiful Nimisha Sajayan, this film is a masterclass in nuanced storytelling about contemporary Indian society.

DATE: Saturday, May 29th, 2021

TIME: 5 - 7pm
