The Hill Street Country Club presents Sound & Liberation with Joy Guidry and special guest DJ.
Bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry performs her album AMEN, experimenting with various forms of southern Black American music, from jazz to gospel and ambient.
AMEN is the 3rd release by bassoonist/composer/producer Joy Guidry. The conception of this album came from many talks with Joy’s ancestors, and it turned into an eight-track project. Amen meets at the intersection of many subjects in music, gender, sexuality, and Blackness. Joy approached this album from her own lived experience as a Black transwoman who was raised in Houston, Texas, and southwestern Louisiana. This project experiments with different southern Black American music forms, such as Jazz, Gospel, and ambient music. This project was created to provide her peace, warmth, community, and release for this chapter of her life. This performance features Joy on Bassoon, electronics, voice, and poetry with support from Scott Li on violin and synth and Mekala sessions on percussion.

RYAN MANALILI - LISTENING PARTY
Saturday, August 3, 2024 | 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Join us for the live release of Ryan Manalili's new EP - HALF FULL with a live band. Ryan uses R&B vocals with an experimental indie sound.
“ I chose “HALF FULL” for the name of the EP because at the time I started putting together the record I was experiencing a lot of loss and grief. This feeling of excess weight that I felt I needed to pour out in order to feel back to “normal” again. Realizing that the weight will always be there, it was just about learning to embrace it and learn how to deal with it. I looked at it like it was a glass overflowing with water, and the water needed to be poured out over time. “
I asked two artists join me for this show, Nino and GONE. Both of which saw this project from the beginning to the end. The music they make/play compliment the record's theme, which is just a plus.

⫸ Kadri Williams is a singer, producer, guitarist, bassist, and illustrator who has been experimenting with his sound and message of “radical vocalness, liberation, and the joy of being able to really explore your emotions and stories that are told thru music”. Williams began releasing music in 2018 online, both through Spotify and Soundcloud where he garnered over 1 million streams in just his first year!
⫸ Like many of us since the pandemic, Kadri has been working silently on a journey of reestablishing his principles, values, and sound in order to deliver a more intentional and true representation of his personal message. When asked about his style of music, he said he doesn’t connect to one genre but could say he’s been heavily inspired by listening to his father’s soul records with his family as a child, and the virtual world of anime, sega dreamcast, and Sonic the Hedgehog video game which iconically covers many genres, including electronic, pop, funk, rock, hip hop and orchestral.
